As the conclusion album to PLAYFIELD’s three-album trilogy project, After Life, offers a retrospective. As the eight-part group reaches a denouement, they find themselves in the sound where “listening meets improvisation meets music-making,” focusing on spacious soundscapes and quiet, somber interludes. The trilogy was recorded outside in Brooklyn, on a chilly Autumn day, incorporating the architecture, the people, and the somber feeling of a pandemic in a singular city. Here, the musicians (Daniel Carter on Horns and Reeds, Luisa Muhr singing, Ayumi Ishito on Saxophone, Eric Plaks on Nord piano, Aron Namenwirth on Guitar, Yutaka Takahashi on Guitar, Zach Swanson on Bass, and Jon Panikkar on Drums) gesture towards something mysterious, sophisticated and earnest, towards a grieving city and its ever-forward motion. PLAYFIELD’s three albums will be offered online and in an exclusive, limited-edition CD pressing of 50.

This album is absolutely on the mark! The best of what modular synth is capable of, plus a true spiritual feeling of the "griot" heritage, without aping anything. I'm more than impressed. So beautiful. wilsonnovitzki

This record really hits that sweet spot of calm stimulation. Lush, fat, rolling synths form the foundation for controlled but passionate and thoughtful playing and listening from everyone. Meditative and energetic...and always bad-ass. ps0m

This record at times is the sum of its parts and the strength of its parts. At times, you can plainly tell the player from 100 yards away with your eyes closed, but then you can hear them echoing the ghosts of those who came before them. An incredibly brilliant record from 3 master blasters! pjnewman-364
